more info from powercat: Here is some general information about the Downtown Business of the Week (DTBOW) program:
Purpose: The purpose of this program is to focus on downtown bars/restaurants/retail/services. This is to show these businesses appreciation (aka love) for investing downtown as well as give all readers more exposure to what is available. Everyone reading is encouraged to frequent this business as much as possible during that week.
- Weekly (usually Wed. night, Thurs AM) I will choose a business downtown* for each category. I will post as much information as I know about the place (website, hours, address, etc) and update as I get more information.
- For each category every week, I will post the information in a separate thread in this room. People are welcome to give reviews, comments, hints, etc. in that thread. I would also encourage people to post on their own blogs their experiences. Just link back here so people can understand what is going on. Try to title your blog entry something about the downtown business of the week
- People are also encouraged to keep a running total of what they spend at these businesses per week so we can show the economic impact of this program...in case that information proves worthy in the future.
- Suggestions for businesses are welcome via PM to me. The method of choosing the business is subject to change pending a better method of selecting.
- All decisions are final but are subject to change if I find the place doesn't exist, etc.
Thanks for giving this program a try. I hope we can impact some businesses downtown in a positive manner. I do not have any financial gain in any business I choose.
* For the purpose of this program, I will chose most businesses between the River, Bruce R. Watkins, Pershing Rd., and the West side neighborhood. I may go as far south as 31st.

Went with three coworkers. I had the Chicago dog, one coworker had the "vee" and two had the club. We were all quite happy with our sandwiches, and the two of us who got cole slaw were pleasantly surprised to find that it is not nasty, overly-sweet, mayo-based slaw with practically pureed cabbage, but is instead more of a Carolina slaw, a tasty cabbage salad with a slightly sweet and tangy dressing. Tasted like an apple cider vinaigrette. Good stuff.
The Chicago dog grilled cheese was great, they even have the crazy neon green Chicago relish in effect. I'm always up for a Vienna Beef dog, and it was as good as I expected. The Texas toast was tasty and well-caramelized, with a great buttery crunch. I was a teensy bit wary of the Cheddar and mozzarella combo, thinking provolone might be a better fit, but my fears proved to be for naught; it was quite tasty. The only (minor) disappointment was that I couldn't really taste the onion or celery seed which were supposed to be there. The sandwich was delicious even without their presence being noticeable, but it would have been that much closer to sandwich perfection with them. It also would have been quite cool if they could have somehow put the sandwich on Texas toast with poppy seeds baked into it, but that's probably asking a bit much.
The prices seemed a touch high for what you get, but certainly not unreasonable, and the quality is definitely there. I'll gladly pay 10-15% more for a really good sandwich. None of us had been to Cheesehead before today, and the verdict was unanimous: we will be back.

my wife and I had lunch today at cheesehead and must say that we both were satisfied. I had the same as mean did and it was the bomb! the chicago dog grilled cheese sandwich with chips. my wife had the regular grilled cheese and said it was probably the best grilled cheese she has had. the only thing about that place is that it seems as if the owners went over to the valero a few doors down and found their help on the side of the gas station. the staff was playing rap music behind the counter and had black entertainment television on the flat screen which was kinda funny.
great quality and damn tasty! I will be going back! they close at 3 pm

I don't know if you meant it that way, but that comes off as kinda racist.

I forgot to add that they were not very professional about anything and not happy to be there. go check it out! at least you will be satisfied with the food, but not the service. maybe it sounds a little racist now that I look at what I typed, but it's just not what I expected in a deli downtown. besides, I did not mention if they were black, white or hispanic. people of all types listen to rap music and watch B.E.T. also, I said that I thought it was kinda funny that they were watching B.E.T.

Well, having been there over a dozen times since my first visit, I already know that all the employees are black. However, in contrast to what you're saying, service has always been quick, friendly, and professional, even when they are listening to hip hop behind the counter.

I know! I was like, wow, I can't believe I'm sitting in a restaurant being run by black people...and it was just like eating at a restaurant run by white people! Nobody was shooting each other or yelling, "I want some mother#*&@ing iced tea!"

Are they still just open until 3:00 ? That would amaze me.
BTW, I like that they have cottage cheese as a side option. Good but still not as good as Planet Sub (Yellow Sub).

It does not mean that I won't be back, It was too good, even with rap music behind the counter.

It's unprofessional to have TV and radio blaring when people are coming in for lunch...if they want to remain a lunch stop, the music should be at a normal restaurant level...any music.

In fairness, it has never been blaring when I've been there. The TV has always been muted and the hip hop in the back has only been on once or twice, and you could only hear it if you were right up at the counter ordering. It was easily drowned out by the conversations going on.

The last time I was there, the TV was blaring Fox News. We turned it down.

i don't care if the staff has pentagrams tattooed on their foreheads and blast death metal in the kitchen as long as the food is good.
cheesehead makes a good grilled cheese but i don't see the need to make a special trip to go pay $7 for a grilled cheese! if i am in that area i will go to souperman, kc cafe, or pizza bella every time.

It does seem just a hair pricey, but it is a damn fine sandwich. If they threw in a drink that would be about right, I think. The last time I was there, the TV was blaring Fox News. We turned it down.
