Sorry for starting a new thread about this, but it's been so long since anything happened that the original thread is archived. I got a flyer this evening about a public meeting anout the Second Street project, here are the key details for those who are interested and haven't seen the announcement. There will be a public workshop this Thursday (9/27) at 4:00 PM at the Don Bosco Center at 580 Campbell. The workshop will repeat at 5:45 for those unable to attend the first session. Each workshop will include a presentation followed by Q&A. The agenda includes presentation of a "preferred plan concept" and "urban design altternatives". The proposal appears to also include a significant reworking of Third Street along the lines of Baltimore in the CBD, as well as similar work on the streets connecting 2nd and 3rd. (If the blown-up snippet of diagram on the flyer is any indicator, that includes intentations for parking and narrowed intersections.) Related items for discussion include: -Connections to adjacent neighborhoods -Traffic calming on Third Street -Streetscape and urban design elements -Design of Public spaces[/list:u]
The overall goals appear to remain the same as they were a year ago: building an actual connection between the River Market and the river, better connecting the River Market and Columbus Park, building the Town of Kansas archaelogical park, and fleshing out development around the Riverfront Heritage Trail. No to mention opening up a lot of once inaccessible land for development.

Sounds very interesting. Is this open to anyone? I'll have to leave work a little early Thursday to make it...

Crap, I'm sorry, yes, it was today (4/23). I had two different pieces of paper on my desk and apparently typed the date from the wrong one. Did anyone on here go to it? I tried to and was literally at the door when I got a phone call and had to go back to work (which I had just hurriedly left from) to handle an emergency.

Damn, I missed it too. I was about to leave work a little early to catch the 5:45 session, and I decided to double check this board to make sure it was the right day. I was a little late w/ that question, obviously. I should've gone down there anyway, though, but I figured that someone else on here would have gone and posted a report.

The next public meeting for the improvements to the 2nd Street Corridor will be on November 3, 2004. More information to come next week after I hear back from the consultant/design team.

Lots of interesting ideas.
Anyone else go to this?
Most self-serving good idea. Basketball courts on second street under Heart of America Bridge and dog park @2nd and Grand.
Most interesting idea: creative ways to cover the power plant and disguise the industrial nature of 2nd street.
Most controversial: the amount of public input and regulation of the old railyard area. Public throughways, height and other building restrictions, and views will be controversial here.
It seems like both parties are going to be able to compromise as the developers are actually civic minded people and the planning is not about a power grab. Could be totally wrong but that was my impression from the last two meetings.

This probably deserves its own topic, but the old Republic building at 2nd and Main is being converted into condos. Work is expected to start next year and conclude in 2006.

Republic Fiber building is under contruction. There have been crews there the last few times I've been down there and there is a large collection of dumpsters on the old KC southern site.

Not to mention the Robinson potato building to the east and the 2-story brick building to the east of that. Plus the renovation of the two buildings just south of 2nd on Walnut. There is a lot of activity in this area right now. With everything going on, this would now be a better spot for a place like Garrett's.

No kidding... is there any building in that area right now that isn't either occupied or under renovation? Just a few months ago that area was filled with dead hulking empty shells.
