A friend of mine has opened a new store at 1722 Main called MAC. They have their grand opening this Wednesday, the 14th. It's a cool little newstand that reminds me a little of the best shop of this type in the world: Quimby's in Chicago.

Check it out.

uh oh, Quimby's comparisons.... that's a tall order there.  I'll definitely give it a visit, if it's even a quarter as cool as Quimby's i'm sure i'll like it.

Is it in the retail space of the new TWA Building parking garage?

As far as I know, the hours will be 7am - 3pm, M-F. I'm not sure what their weekend hours are, though I know they're closed Sundays.

That is the exact space, and the coffeehouse and magazine shop has a TWA theme, which is pretty cool.

With hours like that they won't get any business out of me.  That's really too bad.  I am a big current periodical addict. Sad

Give the man a chance to get off the ground before bitching about the hours.  Go in and ask for longer hours. Let him know the demand is there. Residents in the area have the greatest opportunity to prove to the owner that there will be business in the afternoon and evenings.  Starting a  business is expensive enough and tough enough without the added expense of being open with no customers; its going to look better if he extends hours at a later date rather than being forced to cut back on hours due to lack of demand.

How do you know you'll have no customers if you don't even try?

Right on.

I know some folks would try to shop there if they were open later, but we don't have enough people around after hours for shops to stay open yet (that, and a lot of folks don't shop downtown even when places ARE open).  Just try to shop there when you can.

How do you know you'll have no customers if you don't even try?

Planet Sub tried staying open until...8?  Didn't work, even when they were new.  They're at least open until 6.

They didn't try very hard.  How do you know anyone is going to shop at your new business at all?  You don't.  It's all a risk.  Why not start out with more friendly hours (see Scooter's for an example).  If it doesn't work, then I understand.

Cupini's is open until 8 and does good business most nights.  I try to go in there once a week after 6pm to support them.

I tried the same with Planet Sub, but their hours were cut after only a month or so.

I would, but oh yeah they aren't even open long enough for me to ever be able to get in the door unless I take off work.  Very disapointing.

Agreed.   They would easily be my local coffee hangout (only a block away) but they arn't open when I'm around.  It would be a great place to go after work if that was even possible.

Scooters also adjusted their hours after a couple months and began closing earlier.

But they at least tried longer hours.  If business doesn't support the hours, I totally understand.  But how do you know the support won't be there if you never try?
