It's not parking that is hurting M.A.C. - it's that people who live and work Downtown obviously are not spending enough time and money supporting this place.

I have to disagree with ya there a bit on that one. There's a lot of folks living downtown who have never patronized places because of hours these businesses stay open. I live downtown, but work up north. By the time I get home I find  most places are closed when i've finally gotten settled and am ready to head out to unwind. There were a few nights M.A.C. stayed open late and i got a chance to try them and I would visit on the weekends, but it's hard to support places that you cant patronize .... and i'm still pissed at places that wont maintain weekend hours (hear that souperman!)

Its a double-edged sword - when we go out for our evening walks in the xroads you see both a lamentable lack of pedestrians and a lack of open businesses.  Chicken and Egg I suppose.  Heading on three years of living in the xroads, there are still a remarkably high number of businesses in the neighborhood that I have never set foot in because I have never seen them open.

Crossroads cafe finds itself at a crossroads

Now the Power & Light District is taking off, adding to the foot traffic from new condo and office tenants in the area. But Hanlon-Jones may not be able to hang on much longer. She’s put the space up for lease while holding out hope that she can remain its owner.

“I’ve run out of capital,” she said. “So we may be closing shop, someone else may be moving in, someone may be taking over Magazines and Coffee, if they have enough capital to keep it floating until more businesses move into the area.”

Her sales are about evenly divided between magazines and food, but her profit is higher on the food. Still, she doesn’t want to give up the magazines and become just another convenience store.

She’s beefed up the lunch offerings with such items as vegetable parfait with carrots and sliced cucumbers that can be dipped in hummus or ranch dressing, and hot lunch specials such as red beans and rice, beef cooked in wine for 24 hours, and macaroni with three cheeses.
