leaving 4g on all the time is about as smart as never turning your screen off.

but it's a 4G phone. i'll remember this next time you call me an apple apologist.  Wink

A reasonably fair point, but I get 4mbps on tmo 3G. If you *really* need 12mbps I can see turning it on once in a while, but for 99% of applications, 3G should be fine.

You don't lose any functionality by flipping 4g on and off is the point.

You are holding it wrong.

The Evo is getting 2.2 (Froyo) officially on Tuesday, though rumors say it'll begin trickling out earlier for people who manually check for updates. It'll be an over the air update that won't wipe your data.

Looking forward to it.  Should be like having a new phone as it is a major upgrade.

BTW, I got an extended 3500mah battery for EVO.  Is thicker but worth it.  Don't have to worry about managing usage or shutting things off (including 4G).  Can stream net radio over 4G most of the day w/out needing to charge while playing (though frankly 3G is good enough for streaming music).  Still has charge left for next day with heavy usage.  I might be able to get 3 days with avg use but I tend to be a heavy user.

Not sure if this has been posted, but in case you guys didn't know you can open up your dialer and input:

*#*#2432546#*#*

to force your phone to check-in for updates. As far as I know, should work on EVO.

No workie. Sense UI has an option to check for new software versions though so probably the same thing.

Maybe, I dunno. There's a "system updates" thing in vanilla Android under Settings, but it doesn't seem to actually force a check-in. I assume the Sense thing is essentially doing one or the other.

I've now had my EVO for a couple of weeks, and I'd like to find out what people have had the best luck with battery usage-wise.  I've heard/read raging debates on whether or not to use task killing apps.  Does anyone use them, and if so, which ones?  What built-in or shipped with phone apps/services seem to drain the most battery?

I've eliminated as many sync functions as I can and decreased the frequency of most, but I'm finding it difficult to keep track with all of these fun apps I keep feeling the need to download.

How long are you getting out of it?  I'm regularly 17-22 hours and I don't use a task killer automatically (I do have one to kill runaway apps) and have turned back on practically all the tweaks I did at first.

I just bought an extended battery.  It made the phone thicker/heavier but now I can run everything always on and not have to worry about it.
