It's not that easy being green.

Today I came across another prime example of urban renewal in the Longfellow Neighborhood:

The place, "You Say Tomato". Coffee shop, restaurant and local grocery store, located on the southeast corner of 28th and Holmes. Opening day was Friday, July 21st.

The venue is the former 1920s Weneck Brothers Grocery Store. It has since also been a flea market but has now been revamped in shabby-chic decor, featuring local blacksmith work and largely constructed with salvaged building materials and furniture, to reflect and perhaps recreate the neighborhood-oriented days of the past. This place offers a small, hometown kind of feel with a friendly neighborhood crowd already gathering there regularly after only its first week in business.

Their menu changes seasonally depending on the availability of local produce and the mood of the chef- never a dull moment, it seems. In-house specialties include Quiche, made fresh daily (this is what I had, it was delicious!), cinnamon rolls, a soup-of-the-day, and a special Sunday brunch menu. They carry fair-trade coffee and local produce, milk, butter and eggs, and daily fresh-baked bread (from the City Bakery). Oh, oh, oh! And some delicious homemade vanilla ice cream topped with a peach compote....mmmmm.

I highly recommend this restaurant for the quality of its products, its enthusiasm to support local agriculture and other local businesses, as well as the dedication of the owners to invest time and energy in their community.

I'll have to swing by sometime.

I went to the Coffee Girls filling station at 4:00 on Saturday, and it was practically full.

Encouraging...

Not sure if anyone has been to this place yet, but I went to brunch yesterday and it was decent.  A friend of ours recently opened this neighborhood coffee & brunch place that also has coffee by the pound and a limited selection of groceries.  it is at 28th and Holmes in the Longfellow neighborhood, just east of Union Hill.
Try it out - its open tuesday through saturday, 7-7, and sunday for brunch, 9-2.

They have snow cones!  Tried one... it was great.  Coffee and sandwiches are also tasty.  Everything is made from scratch.  Brunch on Sundays has lots of goodies, including home-made ice cream!

I uh, think that song pretty handily predates Saturday Night Live.

You must've not seen the skit. Walken was supposed to sing the traditional song, but instead of alternating the pronounciations, he simply said "tomato, tomato" the same way.

It was funnier on TV than the way I described it.

Ah. I'm not very *up* on SNL from after like 1992.

I just saw the cowbell sketch for the first time a couple weeks ago.

1992 was about the last year SNL was any good. The BushI/Clinton/Perot presidential race was cannon fodder for them back then, and it was hilarious. It's been downhill ever since in my view.

The wife and I have been there twice now.  The biscuits and gravy were excellent, as was the Quiche, the peach parfeit had fresh MO peaches and was VERY tasty, although a little shy on the yogurt for my personal taste.  Great selection of Parasi Coffees...

Quality establishment -- and definitely welcome in the neighborhood

They do, indeed, serve food items that were laid, hatched and borne.

SNL has gone downhill ever since Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi left.
