Cool -- I didn't realize they had that organization. I thought it was more like you said -- that we were responsible for taking care of it ourselves.

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
Working on a project with Neighbor.ly to raise money and several organizations to coordinate outreach efforts. We're targeting a Friday launch for the Neighbor.ly thing (for funding) and if you're interested in helping with door-to-door efforts, I'm keeping a list and helping to coordinate among different neighborhoods. Send a PM if you are interested in joining the list. A preliminary door-to-door east side KCMO effort is scheduled for this Sat. Also, I'll be collecting any flyers etc and getting them posted online so neighborhoods can share others' work. Will let you know as it's posted. The Give Us a Gig effort over the past 8 months has been geared toward exactly this kind of organization.

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
I still don't buy that the current threshold is some do or die number. Google will get terrible publicity if they ignore the poorer neighborhoods because of this "interest" drive. I completely understand the business end of things, but the eyes focused on this experiment are focused on much more than just the business end of things. Articles will not be kind if Google stiff-arms the very communities it did a study to bring attention to, and I am sure Google is plenty aware of this. At the present, it makes sense that they will claim their intention is to ignore communities that don't have the numbers because it bolsters the power of the current drive for registrations, but I would bet that they change their tune within the next year as far as the either/or nature of the fiber thresholds.
Even if current hoods don't meet the number, I'll bet they are either given a second chance, extended into phase II, or implemented after the priority hoods are implemented. Obviously, there can't be guarantees from Google, but I find it hard to believe they would permanently turn their backs on potential customers given their intent to compete with the big boys. If it is just an experiment, then there is even more incentive to move into low-income markets. Part of competing in this arena, though, is to take over. Every hood that Google ignores is a chance for TWC and others to maintain a hold in the area, and from the GOOG's long-term perspective, it is probably better to get as many 7-year-free subscribers as possible, even where interest is low overall.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are right, but I'm not sure what that means from a civic action point of view. I would guess an extension would be based in part on demonstration of interest and active pursuit by neighborhoods.

Geography hurt them. As well as not being proactive enough.

Sounds like they weren't proactive enough. But, geography? how does PV geography differ from Westwood, Westwood Hills?

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
i dont know what ndteve was going for, but PV is a way bigger undertaking than westwood, westwood mills, and mission woods. those three cities combined have less than half the population of PV, and they are in a very limited geographic area directly adjacent to the current phase-I deployment fiberhoods.

For some reason, the "go to first unread post" feature doesn't work for me on this thread...any idea why?

I was finally about to post the same thing tonight. It's this thread only and seems to be about 3 pages behind or something.

Pendleton Heights and Scarritt Point North in the Old Northeast have reached pre-registration goals, guaranteeing them Google Fiber service. http://northeastnews.net/pages/?p=13870#more-13870

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
KC mentioned in same breath as Vancouver as a Smart City, thanks to Google. Mentions MAX too. It focuses on Sly yet he wasn't involved in bringing either. http://www.fastcoexist.com/1680298/pivo ... smart-cityKC, Atlanta and Omaha as entrepreneurial cities... http://www.nuwireinvestor.com/articles/ ... 59633.aspxGoogle still has yet to deliver but continues to pull a lot of attention to KC.

I just received an email invitation from the Fiber Team to the outdoor showing of The Muppets they are showing tomorrow night on the roof of 1271 Main. Doors open at 8. Sounds like it's open to the public. RSVP to merrittwatson@google.com.

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
There is a back to school event today in the Westside, and I just receieved confirmation that Google Fiber will have a booth or some sort of presence there. For those interested, take a look at West Side North and West Side South hoods now and then again tomorrow. It should be an interesting indication of the influence this type of interaction will have. The North is currently at 9% with 12 people to go, and the South is at 5% with 24 to go. My hope is that they can make it to such events in every hood and get some of the disconnected connected.

Re: Google picks KCK/KCMO for ultra fast fiber network
The Plaza now has a few pre-registrants and the CBD is over 10%. Have the problems with signing up multi-unit buildings now mostly been fixed?
