They've fixed some buildings but many still can't register. In my building, only the first floor can register. Just checked and still problems. Most of the multiunit buildings surrounding the Plaza still can't register.

The North is currently at 9% with 12 people to go, and the South is at 5% with 24 to go. My hope is that they can make it to such events in every hood and get some of the disconnected connected.

Did you go and did you note how great the attendance was? Now at 6 and 19, so an additional 11. No doubt they will get there.

Looking to do things like this all over the city and interested in best approaches.

Also, look for something soon with Neighbor.ly to help fund underfunded 'hoods.

I just received an email invitation from the Fiber Team to the outdoor showing of The Muppets they are showing tomorrow night on the roof of 1271 Main. Doors open at 8. Sounds like it's open to the public. RSVP to merrittwatson@google.com.

Complete with bouncy castle, ice cream sandwiches, and a drum line. At least 50 people there when I scooted by.

apparently the google van stopped by in gillham park last weekend while a kickball tournament was happening. i dont know how many sign-ups they got, and from which neighborhoods, but google is definitely doing its part to get the word out.

The kickball demographic seems like it would already be plowed ground for Google.

i agree. i think they had plans to stop at the park and it just so happened the kickball games were happening. hopefully they were able to reach some non-kickball folks.

Thanks for the update. I have no kids, so I thought it would be creepy if I showed up.

The really interesting thing will be to snapshot the numbers pre and post first day of school. I'm sure the school districts are all over this as a way of saving money. 6 people in one day is one of the biggest jumps I've seen so far for West Side North. It sounds like this outreach may have been a success, depending on the percentage of those already signed up.

A Google spokeswoman said that promise of wireless Internet connections refers to systems it will install at more than 400 locations around the city for free. ...

As Google Fiber rollouts begin, here’s what cable will watch most closely

Quote:
Because Google Fiber TV’s streams are likely unicast, it stops looking like broadcast and more like the web with clicks and views. This form of advertising fits right into Google’s sweet spot, so you can bet they’re working on breakthrough TV ad models ...

Cable operators have been collecting payments from a diverse subscriber base for a long time. This has required upkeep of billing systems, payment centers and the processing of every type of payment imaginable. While it varies by region, as many as 10 percent of cable subscribers choose to make payments at retail locations and 15-25 percent pay by cash. ... Google will start by only accepting credit cards. ...

Remember too that YouTube Channels and TV will also be offered and will finally get their primetime TV screen debut. Google has pumped up YouTube with high-quality, original content and can now test its market viability against traditional cable fare.

New Google Fiber ad features a fictional basketball team at Wyandotte High School and features former KMBC 9 sports anchor Bill Pikus.

For better or worse Google will be able to cross reference viewing habits with other Google services. Like people who watch these channels or shows tend to search such and such items, or are actually buying certain items via Google wallet or is a constant traveler or is in low income area and buys these items. You'd think content providers and advertisers would love to acquire such cross referenced information and no other cable/SAT provider could do that. If I were a content provider, I'd without question try to get on Google's system to at least explore all of these possibilities. It's at least something they should experiment with in one market.

Here is a quick breakdown as of the first day of school:

KCMO: 50/128 fiberhoods qualified. 2 hoods at 30%+. 13 hoods between 20% and 30%. 8 hoods between 15% and 20%. 4 of those top 23 are 5% hoods; 19 are 10% hoods; and 0 are 25% hoods.

KCK: 10/74 fiberhoods qualified. 0 hoods at 30%+. 3 hoods at 20% to 30%. 0 hoods at 15% to 20%. 7 of the qualified hoods are 5% hoods. 2 are 10%, and 1 is a 25% hood.

Overall, that means 60/202 hoods or ~30% of all hoods have qualified. Only 1 25% hood has qualified. There is still no word on HBO or ESPN, but Showtime and Starz have been added. I imagine lack of ESPN would be a TV dealbreaker for many.

I was told by a good google friend of mine who works on the FiberTV product that Disney (ESPN and all the others that go with it) and HBO should both be there on day 1. They are still fighting over the contract though so they can't and won't say they have it until that's done.

I'll eat my hat if ESPN and most other major channels aren't on the lineup on day 1. Cost might be another question though.

I just found out this week that HBO is owned by Time Warner. I am now less confident that they will get HBO for Google Fiber, seeing as how it is a direct run at the TWC model.

Time Warner and Time Warner Cable are separate companies.

HBO is on most if not all TWC competitors systems. They (Time Warner) care about more $ from subscribers and more systems, not making TWC seem better. That's a nonissue.

The neighbor.ly Fiber funding project is up. So far, 5 backers for $200. My only criticism is that it's not clear how exactly the money will be spent, and whether or not Google is cool with this. But if you're concerned about the Digital Divide, this might be for you:
