KC isn't old enough to have developed that type of housing far enough away from the city center that it wasn't bulldozed and replaced by commercial buildings 75-100 years ago.

Did the city really ever have any to start with? I can't recall ever having seen any old photos of townhouse neighborhoods in Kansas City. Were there some? The only rowhouses I know of that exist today are the Victorians in the short strip just south of the Costco/Home Depot mess in Midtown. ...

I don't know for sure. That was more of a guess, based on the fact that when those were built, 31st was pretty far from the city center. I would be surprised if that row was a housing type totally unique to KC. Aren't there a few brick rowhouses in Columbus Park? They aren't as nice as the ones on 31st, more like what you see in Philadelphia.

i dont know about attached rowhomes specifically, but i feel like in the quality hill area there were a lot of square, brick, detached homes that were about 3 feet apart, kind of STL-style. there are also homes like this currently in pockets of Old NE.

that data set is interesting. i find it a little hard to believe that folks in waldo are at a 10x greater risk of crime than those in PV, but i dont have any competing figures to back it up.

really, how many times do you read or hear about some yuppie being shot, killed, attacked, etc. randomly around their home?

I certainly believe the property crime states (larceny, robbery, auto theft, etc.). Violent crime stats shock me.

there's a correlation between poverty and crime. and when poverty is within walking distance, property crimes will escalate. I don't know anybody in hyde, brookside, waldo who have been violently assaulted, but I'd say that the vast majority of people I know in that area (which is a lot, btw) have had their car broken into at least once or dealt with some other petty larceny.

64113: avg. household income = $150K

avg. household incomes in zips directly to east, 64110 ($53K), 64130 ($41K), 64131 ($57K).

PV, on the other hand, is bordered by Mission Hills, Leawood, Overland Park, Mission, and Fairway.

As for broken bottles, it's weird. I never really noticed the trash and miscellaneous dangerous/nuisance detritus that litters midtown until we got a puppy a couple of months ago. It is a constant "leave it!" battle. We went for a walk on the Indian Creek trail this weekend, and it was so awesome to not have to constantly be warning him off all the interesting stuff at nose level.

Something about Lee's Summit must really make people want to throw stuff out their windows. I guess people like trying to hit trees with their bottles, because we get at least a couple a month along the sidewalk. Then occasionally there's random undergarments, etc.

speaking of random drama on your porch, my brother, who lives in a nice subdivision in exurban STL and is a bit skittish about "the city," had basically a brawl occur in his driveway and porch area a couple years back. apparently a neighbor a few doors down was having a graduation party for their college-aged son or whatever, and some shit went down and my brother had to basically go out and break up a fight on his property. wildwood police were called and within 2 minutes the place was swarmed with cops and a paddy wagon like it was a riot.

with that, i can say that he has had more experience with "crime" at his house 30 miles from the city than we have near 44th and campbell!

I had something similar happen a few years back. I looked out the window and thought I saw a neighbor kid wrestling outside with a few other kids watching. I didn't think it was a fight because it was so pathetic. I looked outside five minutes later and there were a few members of LSPD right in front of my house.

I've only parked outside maybe three times... and managed to have my car get egged one of those times, along with a neighbor's car. At least I didn't get a window shot out, because that has also happened to a car right in front of my house.

None of these things happened while living in Raytown for about the same amount of time.

I've known quite a few criminals in my life and, with the exception of petty drunken vandalism/brick through random window type shit, they all drove to and from their crimes.

I just don't think people rob houses and get away down the sidewalk (or on the bus) in places like KC.

Other than teen bike thieves, I agree with this analysis. Even car thieves are typically dropped off.

But....the chance opportunity for criminal behavior increases near the criminal's place of residence. They may be driving, but they are driving more often near their house than in the rich hinterlands. A premeditated crime is one thing, but most crimes are “hey, let’s rob the liquor store”, or “dude, that garage door is open” while doing daily activities in their neighborhood.

Without the statistics to back it up, I remember reading years ago that most criminals do their crimes within a few miles of their residence and typically within walking distance.
