Re: KC in TV and Movies
This really doesn't have anything to do with KC, but a commercial that plays in KC. Has anyone ever seen that Commercial for Worlds of Fun where all they do is scream through the whole commercial? It's the most annoying commercial ever, i just want to rip my hair out when I see it and that family for 4 looks so damn trash looking, they could have at least made them a little nicer looking then some family straight out of Independence.

Re: KC in TV and Movies
I recently watched Robert Altman's 'The Delinquents', which was filmed in Kansas City in the 1950s. The opening credits are filmed at night as a car drives south down Troost Avenue from Linwood, passing the Apollo, the future location of the Jewel Box, and many other places before turning right on Armour Boulevard. It is extremely depressing, given how many nightlife establishments there were on this stretch of Troost Avenue at the time. It is on Netflix streaming...

Wow, really? I wonder if it is the exact same commercial they play here in DC for a local theme park too...(6 flags or King's Dominion...forgot which one). The family looks lower middle class in our commercial too. Probably is the same one.brewcrew1000 wrote:This really doesn't have anything to do with KC, but a commercial that plays in KC. Re: KC in TV and Movies
I hate that commercial. But I always thought of amusement parks like WOF as sort of a lower-middle class thing. Not sure why. But God forbid the common people actually be represented on TV!
Re: KC in TV and Movies
Yea, that plays in DC too for Kings Dominion (Cedar Fair), very annoying.
Re: KC in TV and Movies
So, I see Golden OX sold out to Walmart! I have seen that commercial like 10 times today alone in the DC market.

This house, on the SW corner of Elmwood and Gladstone Boulevard in the Old Northeast, appeared in The Delinquents, and also appeared in another film, but I'm not sure which one.voltopt wrote:I recently watched Robert Altman's 'The Delinquents', which was filmed in Kansas City in the 1950s. The other film was "The Cool and the Crazy." We used to live there (when we were cool and crazy).

Re: KC in TV and Movies
I nearly fell off of the treadmill today when I saw an ad that showed a WalMart spokesperson wandering through the Golden Ox dining room, telling diners that the steak they had just eaten was WalMart beef and asking for their reactions. I had to actually google it to make sure I hadn't hallucinated it in an state of oxygen deprivation. It's true. They're calling it the Steak Over.
I've hardly considered the Ox a fine dining destination for a long time but shouldn't there still be some sacred cows?

Re: KC in TV and Movies
Was watching The Universe (Season 5, Episode 3) on Netflix about solar storms. About 3-4 minutes in it shows power outages that could occur and they use the KC skyline with Union Station in foreground, with lights going out.
Is also on youtube, about 3.5 minutes in..

The Today Show and The Weather Channel in town to film Al Roker's segments live from the Nicholls fountain tomorrow morning.
Re: KC in TV and Movies
Saw Harold Reynolds and George Brett filming something on the Plaza today. Assumed it was ASG-related.

This isn't on TV...yet. But KCPT is pronbably going to air it at some point this summer to promote the Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival.

Tanqueray produced this short, 2 minute documentary on KC's history and current bar scene. It's remarkably well done, with great shots of Union Station, downtown and several bars. Great music and editing really give it a fun vibe, and I love that they chose to play off of the Paris of the Plains theme. From the Tanqueray site:
"Some cities are known for sin. But, did you know Kansas City was more wild than Vegas during Prohibition? Maybe that's why they boast one of the most innovative and diverse bar scenes in the nation. Ladies and Gentlemen, let us introduce Kansas City - Paris of the Plains".

Good to see a beautiful day in KC, the JC Nichols fountain and some of the nice buildings around it on the Today Show this AM with Al Roker. He said a lot of nice things about KC.

Re: KC in TV and Movies
Haha. Las Vegas, as we know it, didn't exist during Prohibition (1920-1933). Gambling wasn't made legal in Nevada until 1931, and the first legal casino didn't open until that year. In 1930, the population of Las Vegas was 5,165, while Kansas City had a population of 400,000. During Prohibition, Kansas City was already one of the top three or four convention cities, and 200 trains a day stopped at Union Station.KC Sporting Life wrote:This isn't on TV...yet.
