OFFICIAL - Centropolis on Grand (5th & Grand)
$8mm 56-unit apartment building to be built at Fifth & Grand on the streetcar line. The infill developments are really picking up steam lately. Only thing I would like to see at that corner is a little ground-floor retail. But I suppose we'll survive without it

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??
there's already a lot of *empty* retail nearby and shops that don't open in the evenings. the river market needs to see that change first before more is needed. don't want to end up with the urban version of sprawl because there's too many spaces to locate
luckily there's a number of nearby buildings ripe for redevelopment that could hold retail when it is needed

Haha holy shit, when I saw your link I thought maybe a second project had popped up for this corner. My mind about blew!loftguy wrote:More apartments coming to 5th and Grand.

This is just another awesome project. As much of a bummer this Jimmy John's project is becoming, we really shouldn't be too concerned. Nothing can stop this momentum! (though I don't like the precedent this JJ project will set)
I really love dense new construction on vacant lots. It's the shit!

Re: Centropolis on Grand (5th and Grand Apt project)
The continuous flow of announcements is great but is any downtown housing project expected to open in 1st half of 2014?
Re: Centropolis on Grand (5th and Grand Apt project)
Lucas Place has got to be getting close...right? It seems like work has been going on for years over there.

Is this the lot next to conover lofts? Great spot for infill.
Re: Centropolis on Grand (5th and Grand Apt project)
For those interested, here is a pic of the historic Centropolis Hotel, originally located at that corner.

Will Sue be even more mad now, since she can not only expect a streetcar line running in front of her business, but whole bunch more hipsters living near her business as well

The Centropolis Hotel was located on the NW corner of 5th and Grand (not the site of the new apartments) on what is now the parking lot for City Market. It was the City's best hotel until the Savoy was built, and was the first hotel in Kansas City to have electricity.

I'm trying to remember what used to be on that corner where the apartments are going. Need to look at tax assessment photo collection.

Wasn't that where the produce wholesaler was? Torn down around '07 or '08 for a project canceled when great recession hit?

There was an old poultry warehouse next to 523 Grand. Further north were several 2-story retail buildings that at one time included a Chinese laundry. They were torn down before the '40 Tax Assessment photos were taken.

You're thinking of the block south of 523 Grand.moderne wrote:Wasn't that where the produce wholesaler was? Torn down around '07 or '08 for a project canceled when great recession hit?
