Post 3710 Main building to be renovated
Agency that helps disabled people will renovate empty midtown structure

Quote:
An empty building at 3710 Main St. that once housed a textile factory is to be renovated by The Whole Person, a social service agency that serves disabled people.

The agency, which has 2,000 clients throughout the metropolitan area, is planning to start work this summer on its $5 million redevelopment of the historic Goodenow Textile Co. building in midtown Kansas City.

The three-story brick structure opened in 1929 as an undergarment manufacturer.

sounds like a great re-use of a cool building.  good news for (what's left of) the main streetscape.

Yeah, they are, but unfortunately they won't seize the opportunity to name this "the panty loft"

I'm glad for this because that building has been empty for a long time.

I just wish that the owner of the Hawthorne apartment building down the street would redevelop that property.  I worry about it since there are open windows in it and the effect of weather on the building.  Why doesn't the City make the owner cover the windows?

I too worry about the Hawthorne.  I will be unbelievably upset if it is allowed to deteriorate to the point that the "unsalvagable" excuse is once again used, and it seems like it is well on its way to that point.  That would be a HUGE loss to midtown and potential residential in the city in general.

This is great news for Main St.

In other good news, apparently the groundbreaking for long awaited Main St. streetscaping  occurred on Jan 26th. http://myemail.constantcontact.com/MainCor-s-Annual-Celebration-and-Streetscape-Groundbreaking.html?soid=1102142476975&aid=jK50W8TfPLw

I can't say that I have noticed any work, but I haven't been looking for it.

Here is a blog with some renderings:
http://midtownkcpost.com/2010/12/13/a-sneak-peek-at-the-new-main-street/

First phase is 43th to 38th St.  Phase two 38th to 34th is scheduled for mid 2012 completion

Agency for the disabled’s new offices have universal appeal

Quote:
When a board member mentioned the vacant structure at 3710 Main, it seemed a natural fit.

“A lot of the people we serve are in midtown, or within a few miles,” Robinson said. “It’s on the MAX line, and Main Street was already undergoing revitalization.”
