Post Organic market to come to Hospital Hill area
Opening in March.

Craig Howard is busy building Howard's Organic Fare and Vegetable Patch

Quote:
The former office in the century-old City Ice Co. Building is a raw space. It has bare brick walls, exposed ducts and a garage door that looks out on Campbell Street. But Craig Howard, standing on the plywood floor that he laid last week and sipping tea made in a nearby electric kettle, sees the potential for a very different kind of farmers market here at 900 East 21st Street, in a corner of the building that houses the City Arts Project....

On a wall of what will become Howard’s Organic Fare and Vegetable Patch, he envisions the produce cooler filled with local greens, eggs, milk, meat and cheese. Bricks from a stack out back will define the market’s aisles. This will be a small farmers market — a hybrid of a cooperative and a neighborhood corner store.

i hope this takes off, though i am not sure that his "quasi honor system" is very sustainable. and while the building is great for the project, it's an obscure little pocket of downtown that will afford precisely zero visibility.

i have also heard rumors of a similar "local market" type concept near the Filling Station area.

Yes, it's going to have to depend on word of mouth, because most people don't know that building exists, and never have been down that street. I only know about it because I'm among the bizarre subset of people that explores strange parts of the city. :D

As far as his growing organic produce on the vacant lot adjacent to the building, I sure hope he's done soil samples because I can't imagine what has been on that lot, or what the soil has in it. :D

Indeed. I'm always surprised how gung-ho urban gardeners/farmers get so excited about growing their own food, and locate their gardens in urban lots that were loaned or donated and/or get free dirt from some excavation down the street and don't even consider testing the soil, first. Most urban lots in KC have a history of heavy industry and toxins from dumping, from a time when people were either too ignorant to know what they were doing or didn't care. There's actually some government agency that will test the soil, for free.

PumpkinStalker, Tosspot, AllThingsKC, Schugg, and I used to ride around together taking photos of forelorn parts of the city in search of neat old buildings and houses. :)

I'm intrigued by this but can't grasp what's going on - maybe it's just the way the story was worded. For $60/year you can shop there 24/7? Can't people just walk out without paying for a lot of stuff? Wouldn't rodents snack on the produce if it's not put away after normal business hours?

Here is the website for the grocery: http://howardskcmo.com/

And here's a write-up from the Star/Ink: http://inkkc.com/content/cover-story-ho ... al-flavor/

Sounds like it's basically a 24-7 farmer's market. Anybody been in?

I drove by it on Saturday morning, it was empty and looked closed. It's kind of hard to find and no really good direct routes from Crossroads.

It sounds like it's not staffed 24/7, but "members" get 24/7 access.

Yeah, it's a members only co-op. You pay a $60 annual fee and you get the key codes for the door.

Just got back from dinner party in Longfellow and they mentioned this place. Something about making a list and putting in a locker. Not clear on how it works.
