Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
Always is Moroni on an LDS temple. This one is very similar to the one in west St Louis county.

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
Generally the Mormon temples I've seen are reasonably attractive buildings with nice landscaping. The one in Oakland CA does nice Christmas lights/etc.

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
Not unlike the STL Temple. You can see that golden Angel Moroni for miles. Beautiful.
If they have an open house for the public, be sure to go if you're at all interested. It's interesting to learn about the beliefs of others. We went to the one in STL when it opened-it was beautiful inside and out.
PS-Contrary to the protesters outside the Temple, we didn't turn to stone, weren't converted, weren't embarrassed, didn't see any nekkid folks nor any cult happenings, etc.
After the public open house, it will be closed to non Mormons for "time and all eternity."

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
if we're lucky, we'll get the Fred Phelps protesters at the opening since they showed up when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was in town (although they may have mixed up their dates because they were protesting the Jews(?) or the Bible in general (?) or maybe other less-efficient protesters (?) They really need to have a clearer message; it's hard to even know what they're hating any more. Fame has really torn that group apart. I'm just waiting for them to show up on VH1 at this point. ...alas, a boy can only dream. Maybe they'll give autographs! Really, we should all go up to the Fred Phelps Traveling Show (I'm not sure if that's his name and I'm too lazy to click on another tab and google it) and get pictures and autographs. But we should act like they're someone else. just for fun...

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
That is curious - I thought most of Phelp's ideology was targeted at tolerance of homosexuality. I didn't think the Cult of Joe Smith was really famous for its tolerance of homosexulality.

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
The military isn't known for its tolerance of homosexuals either, and the Phelps clan protests military funerals and military speakers. The Phelps clan is way beyond using logic for their protests and is now in "let's protest anything we can to get attention." mode.

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
But they would also be considered heritics for other beliefs such as proxy baptism for the dead, the angel Moroni, having their own "biblical" books, drinking 7-up, etc....

After prop 8 in California, the gay community there would love to see the Mormons and Phelps slugging it out.

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
I always thought it would be a good idea to get the Westboro Baptist crew to show up at openings and ribbon cutting ceremonies. They're cheaper than spot lights or those inflatable gorillas - and they guarantee more press coverage. I'd invite them to any business I was opening.
Maybe we ought to let Jack In The Box know they're available.
Their website is pretty funny too - Can anyone guess the URL? Yep - godhatesfags.com.

Perhaps they can get them to come promote the Garment District at P&L?

Re: Mormon Temple Announced for Shoal Creek Valley
My husband, son and I visited the Temple at the open house on Wednesday, April 4. The event was well planned and executed with the possible exception that way more people showed up than were expected. The tour was supposed to have been from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and we arrived on time. However, there were no parking spaces remaining for us. We had to park on a side street.
Naturally, after days of 80-degree weather, it was rather cold and windy on that day, which made standing in line a bit uncomfortable. But tour guides quickly identified their tour groups, took command, answered questions and made the time go by quickly and pleasantly. During this time, we learned that each Mormon assembly (church group, parish, those who identify with a particular location--whatever you want to call it) contains up to 500 people. When that number is exceeded, another church is formed.
Our tour guide--who did an excellent job--was asked why that location was chosen. If I remember correctly, he said the site was much less costly than others, say in Phoenix or other places around the world. There are currently over 120 such temples.
People attend church services on Sundays at a church building on the property. The Temple is reserved for sealings (what the rest of us would call weddings), ancestor baptisms, instruction, meditation and study for the other days of the week. The Temple is viewed as God's house.
Many houses have been built on the property, and many more will be built. Anyone can purchase those houses, even non-Mormons. One house--a beautiful one--is reserved for the Temple President. He is usually a retired, capable person who oversees the Temple. And he does so without pay.
When we finally got to the front door, volunteers put protective coverings over our shoes and we were allowed to enter. The interior, in keeping with the beautiful exterior, was extraordinary. Lots of white and gold. Most of the rooms (and there were many) were a bit small, but exquisitely appointed. The gigantic chandelier in one room was the largest I have ever seen. It must have had thousands of crystals on it.
The baptistry was the one large room. It contained a swimming-pool-sized "bowl" where the faithful could be baptized on behalf of ancestors. The huge container rested on twelve, life-sized statues of oxen, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. "Normal" baptisms are performed in the nearby church.
I think it may still be possible for non-Mormons to visit the Temple, as the huge turnout prompted an extension to the open house.
