register NOW, then keep checking the KCEB website to see if it gets processed before may 22 (last day to request a ballot). i have voter reg forms and will deliver anywhere downtown, night or day!

in short, this won't follow the traditional election calendar.

I have sent in my request for a ballot and I will send this around to people that I know. Thanks again Dave for making it easy to request a ballot.

we'll be at First Friday next to Mid-America Arts Alliance this week. stop by to register to vote, pick up a ballot application, or say Hi.

Dave-

I haven't seen any campaign material distributed on this so I threw this together - especially for First Friday and the condo dwellers downtown. Thoughts?

Cleaver still behind the times on mass transit

Quote:
“The parking situation needs to be addressed,” Cleaver said. “My fear is the failure to do so will lead to mass complaining. This project has been touchy from day one. My hope is there won’t be a revolt with employees down there.”

In this struggling economy, this argument may not generate much sympathy among the general populace, but that’s what Cleaver said.

So who’s to blame?

“When you talk to people in Washington, they don’t understand the parking situation in the Midwest,” Cleaver said.

a "streetcar stroll" is being held for neighborhood stakeholders on wednesday morning. we'll be walking the entire route. about 50 people are registered.

an additional round of public meetings will be held May 15-17: http://kcsmartmoves.org/pdf/downtownAA/PublicMeetingInvitation-May2012.pdf. ballot applications will be available at each meeting.

in addition, each registered voter in the TDD boundary will receive a ballot application by mail in the next week along with a campaign letter from mayor james. we've also scheduled informational sessions in some of the larger residential buildings downtown to help those residents with the ballot applications and answer questions. if you'd like to host one of these meetings, please PM as soon as possible.

may 9 - the metropolitan
may 10 - atriums west
may 14 - the view
may 15 - wallstreet tower

deadline is may 22 to apply for a ballot. if you don't request a ballot by 5pm that day, you don't get to vote!

TIGER grant winners will be announced by june 1.

Downtown stroll tracks streetcar route

Quote:
About 35 people did a “streetcar stroll” Wednesday on the proposed 2.2-mile route, primarily on Main Street through downtown, to get an idea where the streetcar stops would be, how vehicle traffic and parking would be affected and the impact on utilities and businesses.

It’s one more step in the engineering planning needed to make the streetcars a reality in the next few years. It also was a preview to public meetings scheduled next week on how the streetcars would operate and how to minimize the construction impact.

“This is the closest we’ve ever been,” said David Johnson, a downtown resident and streetcar proponent. “It’s very doable.”

Ha, when I first read this I read "..streetcar prophet."

Have a look at the second letter on this page. It's so laughable that I'm nearly convinced it is satire:

downtowners! did you get your mailer yet? they were dropped early tuesday, so everyone should have gotten one by now.

lots of new info from the stroll yesterday:

- the jog on pershing to crown center has been dropped.
- switch to a counter-clockwise loop around city market is looking pretty solid.
- P+L stops (with new boarding bulb-outs that would be city property) will dump passengers directly into drunken fish (NB) and AMC Mainstreet (SB).
- all on-street diagonal parking would be converted to back-in angled.
- on-street parallel parking would be converted to full-time or removed.
- heavy use of center left-turn lanes to prevent streetcar getting stuck behind turning cars.
- center island station at union station under the link would be a model for southern extension where main is wider.
- dedicated ROW between 20th and the southern terminus, again due to the massive width of main at that point.
- tail track at union station would allow streetcars to change direction without turning around (most modern vehicles have cabs at both ends anyway).
- utilities may be relocated, if necessary.
- new traffic signals at 3rd & grand, 3rd & delaware, 5th & grand, 16th & main.
- believe it or not, there will still be on-street parking between 3rd and 5th on grand (in front of crazy air filter lady's business).

I was out of town and could not make it. So, thanks Dave. Lot's of good news in that report.

These seem like excellent decisions. I am totally putting my faith in downtowners (and, unfortunately, the Feds) to make this happen. Initially I was pretty lukewarm to this idea, but I increasingly I feel like this is the most exciting prospective development that's happened in KC as long as I've lived here.

Post Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
so much potential:

- the stop at 8th & main (mostly parking lots + derelict flash cube building)
- the stop at 12th & main (KC's tallest building is nearly vacant)
- the stop at 16th & main (all four corners are surface lots!)
- the stop at 20th & main (grassy hereford house lot + derelict midwest hotel, part of the "budget hotel" historic district)

of course, these black eyes are surrounded by awesomeness, so this short corridor is our best shot. if not this, then nothing.

do you know if they're considering closing the entrance to the cosentinos garage on Main? or at least during events?
