 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
last public meeting tonight (union station, 4-7pm). if you haven't been to one yet, you have to check out the detailed map. it's so enormous and detailed they won't be able to put it online. it's been a big hit at the meetings.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
It looks like when it is just a municipal issue on the ballot voter turnout tends to be quite light: http://www.kceb.org/electioninfo/pastelections.php

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Dave it looks like you are doing pretty well according to the link smh provided. I am sure you will get more requests before 5pm on the 22nd. Also, it looks like your mailer and info sessions did really well.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Interesting find on Bing... I think this is the big reason the owner of the air filter company is so against the streetcar proposal. She won't be able to use Grand street as her personal loading dock anymore. She alluded to this in the radio broadcast but my impression was that her delivery / shipment vehicles utilized curbside parking (parallel). Sounds like NKC south of Armour would be a much better fit for this light industrial use if she's so inclined to move there. That whole row of buildings would make great residential / mixed use conversions.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Good information from the session last night and the map is highly detailed. Only concern that I have is the talk of extending it to the plaza/51st street. I asked the one of the presenters (Christopher I believe) on what the limit is on the length of a route for a streetcar and they said around 4 miles, but he wasn't totally sure. If that is true wouldn't the total length of the route to the plaza be 5 miles?

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
I don't see how that can be true if one of the alternatives being considered to the "sanders plan" for regional rail was a streetcar running that distance instead (and functioning more as light rail once it go out of the city).

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Good point and he did say he was unsure, but thought it was 4 miles. Maybe he was thinking of what was done in Portland? Anyways, he also said that city will work on a comprehensive plan for streetcars throughout KC after getting this line started. I hope that is true, since it would be nice to rebuild KC's old streetcar lines where it makes sense.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
That is a bit worrying. 5% seems a bit low.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
It's most likely average for local elections. The fear is not that it's low, but that the KC media will run with the message stating that a few hundred voters decided the election. Either way I don't care, as long as it passes, but I understand the concern.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
Yeah, I guess looking at the link posted above - http://www.kceb.org/electioninfo/pastelections.php - 5% is not exceptionally low for a mail-in. Oh and streetcar lines can be 10+ miles in length and indeed sometimes are in Europe, the longest being about 15 miles long.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
remember, this is just for establishing the district, not the tax. That will come later (though will have an equally low turnout i'm sure).

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
They will probably be cautious with that messaging. There are sitting council people whose vote totals were under 1,000.

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
I sincerely hope the streetcar passes. I think a lot more people will find it useful than what they might think. For example, I walked from 10th & Main to City Market for lunch today with some co-workers. It's a pleasant walk, not too far. However, it's rare that we take the time to walk down there and back over lunch. With the streetcar I plan to begin eating lunch further afield (City Market, Crossroads, etc.) on a more routine basis because I'll be able to cover the ground a bit quicker (and be insulated from the heat during later summer).

 Re: KCMO Downtown Streetcar
http://www.dnakcmo.org/uploads/2/8/4/9/ ... te_map.pngOnly changes from that map are that it will loop around the Market now (Left on 3rd, left on Delaware, back to Main) and will not turn onto Pershing, but rather stop underneath the Link on Main.
