Post Re: Sushi
The new restaurant on 16 and main NARA will have good sushi.  It is set to open in a week and a half I've heard.  My friend owns the place and has a very interesting concept.  It isn't straight sushi but more of a fusion place.
In case your drawing a blank it is across from Danny's and almost parallel with the Soho South lofts.  Up from Bazookas and Bulldogs when heading north.  4 story white building on the east side of the road.

oh, the original, totally.  it's just no fun unless it's overdubbed in english.
alton brown is my hero tho...  so the american version gets points for hiring him to do commentary.

Too bad. I don't play the forum "I know more than you know" game. I know that KC sushi makes me cringe, and I know what I am talking about.

It's a pretty silly if not stupid overgeneralization.  All sushi in the US is not the same grade as in Asia.  The US requires that raw fish be frozen before eaten to kill parasites.  I've eaten sushi all over and have good and bad everywhere, the worst in the Korean strip in Manhattan.  Some KC sushi places are reasonably good and some get decent sushi grade fish (Juns in particular).  I do agree that most KC places don't store and display the sushi openly in cases for personal picking, which is the way to go.

The sushi chefs in KC are not as fast as I've seen elsewhere, but that's just fluff.

I find it laughable when someone on the coasts ask how the Midwest could possibly get good fish.  When looking at a menu at a seafood place on the coasts, hardly any of it is regional and is shipped the same way we get it.

This is an interesting point because although the fish must be frozen, LIVE fish can be slaughtered on US soil. I have been to several restaurants that will pull the live fish from a salt water tank and kill it on the premesis. Questionable? Maybe. Tasty? Definately!

Of course nothing can beat Japan beacuse they buy the fish daily and transport it directly to the restaurant while it is still flapping! If you have had that it is hard to go back!

You need to talk about how poor sushi is in the US then, not specifically KC.  But I'm guessing you don't know much about how to make it or what even nori is.  You probably even think wasabi is real. :)

Are you being ironic?

Unfortunately, your expertise is nothing more than an opinion; one of which you tout often. To me, that makes you sound like a pompous ass. However, you're more than welcome to post a resume for us little people so we can bask in your glory. In reality, laugh our proverbial arses off that you'd even submit the idea of showing us your credentials to prove your opinion (I emphasize opinion) is right about being an expert on sushi.  8)

Back on topic:

I like Jun's. Not because I am an expert or anything, but because I feel they take particular care to please their customers and not get them in and out like Kona and other restaurants around KC. People piss about how poor fish is in Kansas City, but that opinion often dismisses the fact that all fish from the coast is shipped to the Midwest flash frozen or packed in ice, then distributed all across the United States.

Post Re: Sushi
Had dinner Saturday night at Moonlight Grill and Sushi Bar, Hwy 152 and Flintlock Rd, next to Chipotle.  I can't even find an address for this place, it is so far under the radar.  I hadn't heard of it, but we were on our way out to eat and passed by and decided to give it a try.

Although I'm no sushi expert, I thought their fish was very good.  While the edamame appetizer was mediocre, the rainbow roll was very good, and the rock and roll was tasty and fun.  The najiri (sp?) that we had were salmon and sea bass, and were both delicious, although quite large and only utensils were chopsticks.  Are you supposed to cram all that in your mouth at once?

The wasabi was potent and the green tea was a big hit all around.  Will go back if they manage to stay in business - we were the only customers there on Saturday night.  But being the focus of service and cooks, we got a lot of attention and help with our selections.

Traditional Japanese etiquette demands that you use your hands to pick up your sushi - no chopsticks.

Traditional sushi etiquette also says that the chef has to work only with Rice for 5 years before they can even touch a knife...which I don't think happens in a sushi bar in Liberty.  US Sushi etiquette is pretty much anything goes.  If you like wasabi mixed in with your soy sauce, live it up!  I for one will not be eating fugu or the sea anenome, but there are a lot of good places around town to get fairly good sushi.

Lately I like the place in Town Center out south, Sushi House.

Anyone tried the place on 75th and Wornall?  Been wanting to give it a try but figured I'd get opinions first.

Friends of my family own that place. I like it quite a bit, but I'm biased. There were some reviews on this board that are negative, but that was before this couple bought it a year or two ago. They fixed the place up and they make the sushi themselves. Its quite good and I thought amazingly cheap.

Cool, I'll give it a shot then.  But now I feel bad giving a review if it's not stellar!
