Where is the best place for sushi in the KC Metro? I usually go to Matsu's in Westport. Been to a few places up in the Northland and thats about it in the KC area.

Im not too fond of the "Japanese Steakhouse/Benihana" style restaurants, but if they have sushi/sashimi, I'm up for it.

i think Matsu's is the best.

the sushi at Kona Grill ain't bad though, especially when it's half-price happy hour sushi.

I've never been but Fairmont has some great sushi I've been told...and fairly cheap.

I generally like Mat-su, but the last couple times I've been there they've had "bad tuna days." Kinda like a bad hair day...but...with tuna.

Anyway. Sadly enough, most of my current faves are in the 'burbs, and are chains:

Sushi House in Leawood in Town Center at 117th and Nall. Very good rolls, and a good variety of other Japanese food. I think the udon is the best in town. You know it's good when you see lots of Japanese folks eating there. The minimalist decor is handsome, too.

Kobe Steak & Sushi out on I70 near Independence. Most people go there for the teppanyaki, but the sushi bar is excellent. There's always a chef on duty, usually doing sake shots with the customers. The portions are big, and everything is very fresh, including the green tea ice cream.

I also have to recommend Jin's Sushi and Groceries off 40 and Noland Road. The place is wee and Jin runs it all himself, family business style. He's a wonderfully friendly guy who has a lot of regular customers. He does beautiful sushi trays for the Royals when they have Japanese guests. The fish is always fresh and reasonably priced, the portions are huge. You can get a takeout feast for about $25.

I like Jun's, down at 80-something & State Line. Everything seemed fresh, and I love their catepillar roll.

I haven't been impressed with Matsu, but it's been over a year since I've been there.

Theres Sushi Gin at 98th and Nall, they have $1 sushi during Happy Hour.

I like all mentioned and haven't had a bad experience at Matsu. Kona Grill was suprisingly good and Fairmont used to have 50 cent Wednesdays but I'm not sure anymore. Most I've been to in JoCo were pretty good, especially Jun's. One that I don't care for is Kabuki in Crown Center, which too often has dry rice and seaweed but I go anyway cause it's close to work.

This sound a little fishy to me... $1 sushi? Sounds like a $3 steak. Can't be that good...is it?

$1 makes sense, really. esp. at happy hour.

if your restaurant usually has 3 people come in from 4-6pm, and you can lure 50 more people in with $1 sushi, you'll probably end up better off. you'll make money off soda, alcohol, dessert, etc.

although, i went to a $9.99 all-you-can-eat sushi place in Schaumburg, IL once, and the sushi was not very good. it was like mediocre grocery store sushi. so beware!

Just ate at Kato's on NW Barry Road and it was pretty good. I liked it better than Matsu's. I've been to Sushi House at Town Center. The food was so so. I do like the interior design of the place. Clean line and light.

I like Matsu's, however the Octopus at ( G A S P) Kona Grill is exceptional!

Matsu and Kona Grill are my favorites as well. I heard there's a good sushi place in Crown Center somwhere. Has anyone tried the place on 39th by Saigon 39?

Not a sushi eater myself but my wife likes Kokoro's at the northeast corner of 75th and Wornall.  Family owned.  Very nice people.

Matsu's is opening a new shop in Brookside too.  Should be open by the end of January.

Good to hear, we've been wanting to try that Kokoro place. Its not related to the Kokoro's in Lawrence is it? That place was awesome.

I walked in that place and turned right around.  Sushi in an old Subway restaurant just seems shady and it didn't look very fresh.

I don't think so.  Either husband or wife is always there so I'm pretty sure they are sole proprietors.  She usually has their baby with her.  Cute little guy.

I figure anyone that works that hard to get a business going deserves my patronage.  We try and eat there at least once a week.

Considering we watch her make my wife's sushi after we order it I think your observations are misguided.  The place is clean, the people are friendly.  They can't help what the place once was.  Give it a chance.

Here's a tip for sushi. Don't get it in western KS! Went to Salina a couple years ago, and ended up with Hepatitis A right around Thanksgiving.  I felt bad, didn't know what was wrong. The doc told me I had Hep A; by the time I got home, the KCMO health Dept. was looking for me to track the infection. The woman asked me about my travels, and had I been to any third world countries. I laughed and said the only place I had been was Salina. She paused and told me that there had been an outbreak in that part of the state when I was there.  I told her that I had eaten at a new sushi restaurant in Salina, and she got quiet and then said:" let me get this straight, you ate sushi in SALINA, KS?" It was then I realized it probably was not the smartest thing in the world. 

It was not fun, i spent 2 weeks with eyes the color of a yellow highlighter, and 6 months exhausted. On the bright side, you can't get Hep A twice, so now I'm good to go!

This place is the granddaddy of local sushi establishments, open since about 1977 or so. No teppenyaki bar, just sushi, and very cool people. Quality is very good, and they have some hilarious signed pictures of Bo Jackson on the wall, including one stating "Bo knows sushi" I believe. That aside, it's very good, kind of tucked away near the Hy-Vee in a strip mall across from it, but worth the trip to support an early pioneer, I think.
