Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
http://www.siliconprairienews.com/2012/04/gig-bits-q-a-sheds-light-on-100-mile-mark-fiber-hutsHere, it sounds like they claim that they will lay most of the fiber (to all covered areas of KC) before offering the service to homes and that they still "have a while" to go. This just reiterates previous statements, but I believe the huts are halfway done, and the other infrastructure is not so far along. Still, I would expect that, news or no news, the mayors are getting a preview of what Google will have to offer so that they are able to use this information to leverage future business, government, and community opportunities.

There is surely a better place to put this, with all the historical photo types on board, but: http://www.t2.tv/kcphotos/

Re: Google picks KCK for ultra fast fiber network
Yes, that is a google fiber hut ...the third one i've seen... they are always located adjacent to power substations. I have not seen any google fiber huts in KCMO yet. If you see any utility trucks marked "Atlantic Engineering" they are working on google fiber... I just saw some working today at 9th and Armstrong Ave, which is about a block from the YMCA in Downtown KC, KS.

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
The KC star article doesn't specify but this picture is the 400 block of Metropolitan Ave in South Kansas City, KS. Just to the east of where the 7th St Traffic Way passes over Metropolitan Ave. Sounds strange but I could tell exactly where it was from what I saw in the Picture. The street light style gave it away as in KC, KS and the chain link fence on one side of the rd gave it away is Metropolitan Ave. I know my city, even if I didn't know the exact location I could probably guess pretty close what area of KC, KS any photo is from.

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
Two things will be needed if they think regular people are going to purchase this service in large numbers.
One: It must cost no more than $25 to $30 per month
Denying service to people based on their credit like AT&T Uverse does, certainly wouldn't bode well for a wide service adoption.
Two: There needs to be a way for people to leverage the connection.
I'm thinking Internet ready televisions and other appliances for sale. Google branded GB wifi TV's from LG that come pre loaded with netflix, Facebook and other web apps? How about a google tablet that doubles as your TV's remote?
How about a free web ready Google Chrome Book in exchange for a 2 Year contract for google fiber service. No more computer viruses, no more updating software. Computer boots from off to on and on the net in less than 10 seconds.
They could replace overpriced MacBooks the KCK public schools hand out to high school students at $900 a pop with Google chrome books that cost only $200 a pop in bulk purch.
Google could partner with Republic wireless, a company currently offering a beta cell phone service of hybrid cell phones that use wifi connections as the primary means to make calls, send texts, etc and 3G cell connection as the secondary means through tech that seamlessly transitions the phones between the 2. They provide "unlimited" service at $19.99 a month. If every restauraunt, store, government building, and home had GB internet wifi this could be a real solution for large numbers of people.
Or how about wifi "cordless" home phones that use a free Google voice phone number and the free Groove IP app? Now your $30 dollar/month GB internet service gives you free home phone service too. And with a free Google Voice phone number that rings both you home phone and cell phone simultaneously you'll never miss a call.
Unlimited/downloadable voicemail storage on the net? It is already here with Google Voice. Now that guy in Washington State whose I love you daddy Voice mail from his 8 year old daughter who died of cancer can't get deleted again by T Mobile. He can download it whenever/wherever he wants.
The the potential is endless but they need to be provided as options with the service, because most people don't have the time or interest to find this stuff on their own.
These kinds of things are what will encourage wide adoption of the fiber service and that is what Google needs.

Re: KCMO to get Google Fiber too...
$25 to $30 a month would be ridiculously cheap. I hope it's that little, but I am skeptical. That undercuts pretty much everyone else in the game, price-wise, with (presumably) a vastly superior product.

We've heard (from sources close to this operation) that they plan on lighting up KU Med this summer, along with the area west of KU Med (Rosedale) including our little neighborhood, Mission Cliffs/Minnie Street/Lloyd Street.

cool. seems like it'd have to be happening soon in some places if they're already looking to start an advertising campaign here.

There are fiber huts all over North Kansas City and none are next to power substations that I know of. I have 2 within a block of me anyways.

It doesn't really make sense for them to completely bypass NKC?

Re: Google picks KCK for ultra fast fiber network
No NKC has had fiber for several years now. I have had it at my apt for well over a year now. But there has been a lot of utility work going on lately and I think Google is bringing it to NKC and maybe using the fiber backbone that already exists.

Re: Google picks KCK for ultra fast fiber network
What speeds are you getting, and who is offering the service? Forgive me, but I have a hard time believing that anyone has residential fiber yet.
