The Star: KC’s leaders know action on light rail is long overdue

Quote:
“We’ll build it, and the heck with those of you who don’t want to come.”

Expect a more politely verbalized version of that sentiment to continue coming from City Hall when the topic is Kansas City’s inability to get light rail up and running. ...

Biz Journal: Kansas City Council members, law firms contribute to streetcar campaign

Quote:
According to financial disclosure forms filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission earlier this month, a political action committee named Connect KC raised $23,000 through the end of June. ...

Among those providing money to Connect KC are campaign committees for Mayor Sly James ($5,000) and council members Cindy Circo ($2,000), Russ Johnson ($3,000) and Jan Marcason ($2,000). The law firm of Polsinelli Shughart PC, which has done a lot of legal work on the streetcar proposal, contributed $5,000, while Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP and Lathrop & Gage LLP each contributed $1,000.

Lathrop attorney Jerry Riffel gave an additional $1,000 and engineering firm Black & Veatch donated a total of $2,500 through itself and subsidiary infraManagement Group. ...

So I totally missed the first ballot due to me just recently moving into the Transportation District. What is my best move at this juncture? I wholeheartedly want this rail line to be built (even though my landlord sent a stupid letter saying they wanted us to vote NO!!!) I want to help out in any way possible.

The second KC passes funding I hope NKC updates their TDD to expand the system north

There's thousands of jobs in NKC, there's more space given to jobs than people, and the system could use funding from a second city.

This would also help with bus service costs. there's something like 5 or 6 lines going into downtown on Armour. Express routes could move to I-35 or 169 and local through service could move to the streetcar.

There's also a large space for park and ride spot next to Bosserts.

yes, register to vote NOW and hold on to your voter ID card. you can also give to the project directly via http://neighbor.ly/kc-streetcar.

i'm gonna be real honest with you: participation in rental buildings has been dreadful. if you're not a regular voter, please don't piss away this opportunity by being very excited and then not following through.

i'll be observing the election judges count the ballots, so follow @kclightrail if you want to hear the results as they're announced.

So what's your opinion, turnout as expected or is the low turnout credibility busting? Is the vote on the actual streetcar tax the same format?

I feared less than 400, as was predicted here. I am pleased, knowing that there were people who moved out of the district since ballots were requested and the high bar for participation set by the statute. Timing suggests a live election is a strong possibility for the second election.

I don't think the naysayers -- including the Star editors that wrote that headline -- would be pleased with *any* number. It's just an easy target being so low.

Anyone care to guess how many KCMO voters will approve questions 1 and 2 next week? Bet there won't be any headlines about that.
